The Fiber School is excited about the opportunity to meet with technicians from around the world at TEKFEST 2025. The Fiber School will be presenting 3 training sessions focused on fiber networks. We will be presenting an introduction to fiber networks; components and the equipment used to test and terminate fiber networks. A subsequent session with emphasis on Advanced splicing techniques and field setup. And finally, a session on testing and troubleshooting techniques derived from years of field experience.

Session One – Introduction to Fiber Networks

This session is designed for technicians that have never or have only recently started working with fiber networks. We will cover basic types of fiber and their use in the field. Will be discussing standard connectors, mechanical and fusion splicing with demonstration. And the session wraps up with an introduction to the basic testing equipment such as power meter(PM), light source(LS), visual fault locator and optical time domain reflectometer(OTDR).

Session Two – Advanced Splicing Techniques

Splicing two fibers together is a basic and simple task. Managing 144/288 fibers in an enclosure is an art form. Additionally, learning about splicing in the elements like wind, splicing in confined spaces, identifying fibers are all key things that technicians will encounter in the field. We will be showing some of the unique things we have learned and will share with the audience.

Session Three – Advanced Testing and Troubleshooting Techniques

We have all been there, that 2:00am call the network is down and we need to remediate as soon as possible. What is the plan for finding the outage as quickly as possible? What equipment should I have? What does the OTDR trace really tell me? In this session we will walk through some of these scenarios with audience participation.

- Configuring an Access Point & POE Switch: Set up a functional wireless network with seamless connectivity.

- Dressing a Rack: Install and align hardware neatly within a rack, ensuring optimal functionality and aesthetics.

- Installing a Door Strike: Wire and install a door strike to perfection in this access control challenge.
